Shimla (Apr 11): Himachal Pradesh state unit of CPIM has asked the BJP government in the state to learn some lessons from its counterparts in Punjab and Chattisgarh while sanctioning private universities.

Party secretariat member Tikender Singh said in a statement here today that due to a Supreme Court directive, the number of private universities in Chhatisgarh has come down to 2 from 19, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP alliance in Punjab has rolled back the decision of metamorphosise Khalsa College into a private university.

He said ironically the Himachal government has given Letter of Intent (LOI) to 15 more education shops to open private universities in the state. Seeking to close the gates of the state for more private institutions, the party said that saturation point has already been exceeded as further commercialization of education would be disastrous for the state.

Accusing the government of allowing private universities to sell degrees at their own wish and fancy, he alleged that most of the universities have being allowed to operate without getting University Grants commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) approval. Cautioning the students of taking admission in such institutions, the CPM leader said that it would create precarious situation to them after passing out from such private universities as recruiting agencies demand affiliation of university with UGC and AICTE from where the degrees have obtained.
