HPUTA up in arms against University authorities

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Association (HPUTA) yesterday demanded a vigilance probe into the recent irregularities committed by the authorities in the University campus. The agitation expressed a surprise on the appointment of an unqualified outsider as the new Controller of Examination (COE).

The state government in connivance with the Vice Chancellor had recently appointed an identified right wing sympathizer college lecturer who does not fulfil the required qualifications as the new COE on secondment basis in the university, said the association. This person had not even formally applied for the post of COE, which was advertised in April 2010. The other 44 candidates who had duly applied were neither called for any interview nor were informed by the authorities.

Now, the authorities facing an aggressive agitation of students, teachers and non teaching employees have decided to go for a formal interview on coming Saturday, which is just an “eye wash”, according to the Teachers’ Association. “This action of the University has not only tarnished the image of the University in and out side the state, but has also incurred losses to the University exchequer. This has been done at a time when the University and the state have no money to pay arrears to the teachers and non-teaching staff”, they said.

The position of COE is highly sensitive and deals with some most important and confidential matters pertaining to conduct of CPMT and other entrance and general examinations of the University. The making of appointment on such a position in violation of the rules and merit not only raises suspicions about the working of the authorities, but also spell out their malafide intentions, said the teachers.

  1. I am pained by reading this piece of report on Himvani which is one of my favourite News blog on Himachal since its launch. The reporting is done in unprofessional manner. Please don’t mind but this is true. It seems that the writer is highly emotional in favour of HPUTA and against the current regime. The fact of matter is otherwise:
The HPU has always been a den of favouritism and back door entries in each political regime. The only difference is that the voices are raised by only those who are not affiliated to ruling party. Union Leaders have their eye on plum positions and short cuts.
This time the situation is no different. The authorities have picked up a man of their convenience. His position has no meaning beyond the end of this regime; hence there are no fears of permanency.
As far as competence of an individual is concerned he will be the most qualified person in the HPU history to head the examination section. He was principal in college run by Himachal Pradesh Government for past few years. I think the educationist know the rank of Principal, which is equivalent of Professor. So it is shocking as well as paining to write him “right wing sympathizer college lecturer”. Moreover terming him as ‘outsider’ is very narrow minded approach. He belongs to Himachal Pradesh by birth and had been serving the State government for more than three decades.
What agitating employees are mainly demanding is to fill this post amongst them who entered in the university office as hostel attendant or clerk at the most and reaching up to assistant registrar level. Pity on HPU affairs and especially the examination wing !
I hope author and editor appreciate my comments.
