Urban local bodies to go for polling in Himachal tomorrow

Shimla (Jan 2): As many as 48 urban local bodies (ULB) in Himachal Pradesh will elect their new office bearers on January 3. As many as 304, 645 voters, including 1.60 lakh males and 1.40 lakh females, would use there franchise for about 454 office bearers, including 48 presidents and similar number of vice-presidents, and total 406 ward members in 25 municipal corporations (MC) and 23 nagar panchayats (NP).

It is for the first time that president and vice-president of 25 municipal councils and 23 nagar panchayats will be elected directly and electronic voting machines (EVM) will be used in these elections. State Election Commissioner Dev Swaroop said all arrangement have been completed to ensure peaceful and smooth polling. The Commission is using over 2,100 EVMs in the elections as 457 polling stations have been set up for holding of elections. More than 4,000 employees and security personal would be deployed for conducting the elections.

He said that 50 percent of seats would be reserved for women in ULBs except for the post of vice-president, which would be open. It is for the first time that political parties have been allowed to field their official candidates in ULB elections on their party symbols. The counting of votes would start soon after the polling and results will also be declared the same day. The whole election process would end on Jan 6 and code and conduct would remain in force till that time.
