Direct elections for mayor, Dy mayor, president & vice-presidents of civic bodies in HP

Shimla (Nov 26): The mayor and deputy mayor of Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) and presidents and vice-presidents of 48 odd municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Himachal Pradesh would henceforth be elected through direct electioneering, a notification released here said.

State election commissioner Dev Swaroop passed a notification to this effect here today. In order to discouraged horse-trading to elect the heads of local self-government bodies, the state government had earlier promulgated an ordinances to make provision for direct elections for these posts, which is be expected to be cleared by the state assembly in the oncoming winter session.

It would be for the first time that the mayor and deputy mayor of SMC and president and vice-presidents of other bodies would be elected directly for a full term. Earlier, the elections for these posts were held through indirect voting by elected councillors and members. SMC elections are due in May 2012 while the elections to other municipal bodies would be held next year.
