Shimla (Nov 23): The construction of Renuka Dam hydroelectric project in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, that also aims at providing drinking water to Delhi, has led to a political spat with Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal going vocal on the alleged non-cooperation by Delhi on various issues.

Accusing the Congress government in Delhi of adopting indifferent attitude towards the people of Himachal Pradesh by charging higher commission from them for selling apples at Delhi’s Azadpur wholesale fruit market, Dhumal said here Tuesday: “Don’t expect any cooperation from the state in completing the (dam) project.”

“How the Delhi government is expecting that we will quench their thirst by providing them water when they are fleecing our apple growers by charging exorbitant commission,” Dhumal told media persons today.

He accused the Delhi government of harming the interests of Himachal Pradesh’s apple growers by refusing to enforce legislative measures adopted earlier by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Delhi, to charge commission from the buyers and not from the sellers. The Delhi government has passed a law to make apple growers liable for paying six per cent commission at Azadpur market.

The Rs 3600 crore Renuka Dam project, mainly funded by the Delhi government, to be built on a tributary of the Yamuna river will quench the thirst of people in the national capital and also generate 40 MW of electricity for the hill state. The project has already run into trouble with the Union environment and forests ministry objecting to 775 hectares of forest land being used for constructing of the dam.
