Himachal capital echoes 'Walk Shimla Walk'

Shimla (Oct 23): On the call given by Ashadeep, an NGO, hundreds of citizens of the town, including students, participated in “Walk Shimla Walk” campaign to encourage and promote the habit of walking.

The walk was flagged off by Accountant General of Himachal Pradesh Geetali Tare from Chaura Maidan. Riding on an eco-friendly wheel-chair, president of Ashadeep, Sushil Tanwar, lead the walk accompanied by by prominent citizens, fellows of Indian Institute of Advance Study along with students form 16 schools.

Shimla Mayor Madhu Sood received the walkers at the bustling Scandal Point before it culminated at the Gaiety Theatre. A seminar and open-house was also organised at Gaiety Theatre where Rajeev Marwah, senior resident doctor, Department of Cardiology of IGMC; VP Mohan, former principal conservator of forest; and Vandana Thaplial, state director of World Wildlife Fund, gave presentations on the benefits of walking and preserving nature.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice Kurian Joseph, who was chief guest on this occasion, gave a clarion call to all the citizen of Shimla to walk to their respective working places at least once a year, which can be further adopted every month and so on. Ashadeep president Sushil Tanwar said that each and every one should inculcate the habit of walking and should use public mode of transportation on a daily basis.

Host School BSN Chakkar drew the attention of all towards being considerate to nature through a skit. On this occasion, students also took a pledge to carry forward the campaign.
