Protest cricket match stopped by cops

Shimla: A cricket match for protest. Ridge in Shimla is a regular venue for protest demonstrations, but never the type it was witnessed today. With around 300 school and college students getting together to play a cricket match on the Ridge, the message appeared clear why the youth were forced to play on the only visible open space in the town that is already too crowded to allow any recreational activity – because the state capital lacks parks – and these students wanted the administration to see it for themselves.

So as youths from all over the town gathered at the Ridge in the morning on the call given by YES (Youth Enlightenment and Society), which is running a campaign to make the government aware of lack of parks and community centres in Shimla, a strong message was conveyed to the civic body of the town to take note of the demand. As youngsters shouted slogans in unison forming a human chain around the Mall, the MC office just below too heard the echo, but no official cared to come out. Later the YES volunteers personally went to the mayor to invite her to witness the match, but the request was turned down.

As if that was not enough, while the match was being played policemen landed up there and took away the bats and the ball, claiming that permission was not taken from the authorities. However, Akarshan Chauhan, president of YES, claimed that due permission was taken from the home department for the protest.

As this report was being filed, cops reportedly took Akarshan with them for further questioning.

  1. Good work cops, keep it up! Cricket is not the only game that youth can play. You cannot dig up hills to make a cricket ground for some foolish kids. There are plenty of other activities to indulge youth and keep the environment intact at the same time. Akarshan Chauhan, you should lead your organisation to promote such activiites rather then doing this danga-fasad.

    • Mr. Yashwant… i feel pity at your point of view. You just could not understand the whole point behind it. Its not about gathering some college & school teens to play cricket. Its about making the "DEAF EARS HEAR SOME NOISE". People like you are an obstruction in the development of our society. Do not confine your mind to think less. The campaign is about "THE CONSTRUCTION & DEVELOPMENT OF PARKS" in Shimla. These parks would cater to the cause of not only children but also the adults & old age people as they would have a nice place to spend their leisure time.I feel miserable at your narrow minded scope of thinking.I would suggest you to use your head a little more.

    • GOOD WORK?  FOOLISH KIDS? DANGA FASAD?  i am a student and I was a part of the protest group that day. for your kind information the so called ''OTHER ACTIVITIES'' in which you are asking youth to indulge themselves is invariably leading them to drugs. Shimla AKA HILLS QUEEN is being turned into a CONCRETE JUNGLE. It is said that ''IN A SOUND BODY RESIDES A SOUND MIND''. the students do not have any place build up there physical strength. THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY PLACE TO DO SO. PARKS were supposed to be the places where the young and the old both come together and work out there bodies, but only because of people like you this set up is being delayed. its people like you who have always been a hindrance to the national development. people like you worry not about natures welfare but about your bank balances. and then you blame the system. huh. you ought to be ashamed of yourself!!

    • Dear Chauhan Sir, i
It pains me how the people for whom Aakarshan and YES are  fighting this cause for are not supporting the struggle in the first place. Let me remind you sir that a cricket match was only symbolic of all the activities that children in Shimla are deprived of because of lack of playgrounds and proper parks.
Children are definitely indulging in other activities , but unfortunately those activities are turning out to be drugs and petty crimes. Illegal abuse of substance and increasing violent behaviour among adolescents, leading to criminal tendencies and petty crimes has reached alarming levels in Shimla, like in Himachal. I'm sure you are  aware of that.
I have known Aakarshan for more years than I remember now and believe me sir, he would be the last person who would cause a ruckus and stage gimmicks to gain cheap publicity. "Yes for Parks" is a very noble attempt at getting children and youths back to playgrounds. And believe me sir, we are talking hard facts here. We have identified places in and around Shimla where we can build such parks. Fortunately, We would not need to dig up mountains. Nature has bestowed us with some great natural resources and amenities. Only we have to determine now whether we use those for our need or our greed.
I hope I'm making sense here. We are definitely open to criticism. Obviously, we cannot be right most of the times. We need your feedback to correct us where we go wrong. However, we also need your support when we know we are right. As a concerned citizen , I'm sure you would give us your blessings.

  3. Chauhan Sahab its not about a particular game. Its about the wishes of kids, their childhood and above all their rights. To call kids foolish is not new and we never said to cut the tree or dig the hills to make grounds. We just want the authorities to take notice of the places we are talking about and develop them for the students and general public as parks and play grounds. You only tell me how many open spaces are there in Shimla where children can go to play.
Our organization has some brilliant brains and doesnot require any outside suggestions about what to do and what not to. I think you are not aware about the issue of parks which is directly related to increasing drug abuse by the children of the town. There are no recreational activities where children can utilise their time. The tuition culture has increased enormously, schools have mushroomed up but has anyone ever thought about the pressure through which the kids are going?
Its very easy to call kids foolish, but Sir these (foolish) Kids want their Right " The Right to Play" & "The Right to Childhood" don't snatch this from them.

Mr. Yashwant perhaps you might not be knowing that most of the schools in Shimla do not have proper playgrounds for children. That is the reason why most of the teen-agers are lured towards drugs.
Parks & grounds would stop them from falling into the clutches of drugs by providing a place for recreational activities.
I think that would answer you well.

  7. You are absolutely right Mr. what so ever you are…Actually its not your fault, you were never a Kid -or- a Youth so you can't understand this better. I wish GOD also graced you with that.
And you are to saying that we can't dig up hills to make cricket grounds, rather we can dig them up just to make Concrete Jungles for peoples like You.
Secondly, would you like to explain those other plenty of other activities you are talking about please. I'm also interested in knowing that what all you have done till now except making you life luxury.
Thirdly, when you can't do anything anything putting your ass on fire -or- facing the battle. It'll be much better for you to sit back home in your living room, watching news, making panchayats. And let others do their work. because those who have work to do, they don't have reasons to give thoughts like you.
So, pleasse Sit Back home, Have your food and sleep well…

    bole toh….

    "GET WELL SOON MAMU"

  11. Hi Yashwant and thank you for your comments, but it seems to me that you have failed to grab the gist of the situation. This was not a cricket promotion, but a emphasis on the fact that Shimla does not have public spaces for recreational purpose for children as well as adults. Furthermore, your comment "foolish kids" is offensive, insensitive and degrading, to thousands of children residing in and around Shimla. You have also failed to mention the "plenty of other activities to indulge youth and keep the environment intact at the same time" , which could have the only helpful advice in this comment.

Please clarify whether it is justified to dig up hills for making apartments and parking lots by the land mafia and not for providing parks, and how could one possibly say that building parks leads to environmental damage, bit of paradoxical isn't it
Finally if you feel that protesting in this manner is danga fasad, you don't know your constitutional rights as yet

  23. okay, so, we say we r civilized citizens, so why y r we so bothered bout someone expressing their opinions on a website, if so and so thinks nythn, then he deserves an equal right to believe so, as much we have a right to do nythng like play cricket on the ridge.
i have never, stood against YES for parks, its just that… i know this issue is important, but just by trying to prove someone wrong, i dont think our purpose is solved, we can give him sm respect as a fellow human being, its nt his fault that he thinks the way he thinks. i think if we need to win ny battle, it begins by accepting every aspect of the issue, every reaction that an issue generates…. in the end all we have is to learn from everything…
