HRTC starts issuing e-ticket in its buses

Shimla: Replacing the age-old ticketing system, Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation has recently adopted E-ticketing by installing electronic bus ticketing (EBT) gadgets in most of its buses, a senior functionary of HRTC told HimVani today.

HRTC managing director Bharat Khera informed that they recently purchased as many as 1,600 EBT gadgets, which would save printing expenses up to Rs 40 lakh incured annually. Having an annual turnover of Rs 400 crore, HRTC has got overwhelming response after introducing e-ticketing on 70-80 per cent of ita fleet. “Beside, new system for fare collection has improved its revenue collections as compared to manual ticketing as it is more transparent, easy and quick to operate,” the MD claimed. He said that each gadget cost about Rs 5,800 to HRTC, is compatible with computers of the accounts department, which in turn saves time and manual labour.
Khera claimed that the state transport of Kerela, Karnataka and Uttarakhand were the only few transport service providers using e-ticketing in the country, He added that HRTC would shortly provide machines to every conductor in tis fleet.

The official hoped that this exercise would ease out HRTC from the Rs 550-crore cumulative loss.
EBT gadgets provide readily available information of number of passengers traveled in its buses, full fare payers, break journey and revenue collected in one day, it also give inputs about the free and subsidized travel facility offered to 21 different categories in its fleet separately.

HRTC provides Rs 50 crore annual free travel facility to press correspondents, MLAs, MPs and physically handicaps and subsidies fare facility to students, employees and police personals.
It has to ply its services on 1,000 uneconomical routes, which are mostly in rural and tribal areas, causing annual loss of Rs 35 crore on account of its social obligation.
