Water level in rivers rise as more rainfall lash Himachal

Shimla: Moderate to heavy rain lashed many parts of Himachal Pradesh since last 24 hours leading to rise in water level in major rivers and their tributaries, thus posing a threat to downstream areas of the state.

Reports arriving here said that Satluj, Beas, Yamuna, Ravi and Chenab rivers have been on spate for last few days. The water level in Bhakra dam in Bilaspur district has gone up to 1,674 ft and Pong Dam in Kangra at 1,376 ft, as their maximum retaining limit is 1,680 ft and 1,390 ft respectively.

Meanwhile, the state administration has been busy assessing the loss due to incessant rain to seek Central relief as loss of about Rs 175 crore has been estimated to public works department roads and bridges in the state.

Broken roads have been creating havoc in the apple belt as piles of apples boxes and bags are lying on the road in upper Shimla as most of the link roads are blocked or there is dearth of trucks to carry the crop to market.

The met office recorded 79 mm rainfall in Poanta of Sirmaur, 71 mm in Renuka and 13 mm in Nahan. In Kangra district Nurpur had 42, Baijnath 18, Palampur 15 mm and Dharamsala 14 mm. Una had 36.8 mm, Jogindernagar in Mandi 15 mm and Sandhol 9 mm and tourist resort Manali in Kullu 10 mm.

The met office said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in many parts of the state in coming 24 hours.
