Himachal Pradesh Assembly today gave its assent to enhance the pension of ex-member of assembly from Rs 10000 to Rs. 14,000 besides providing the facilities for free transit by railway, air or state transport to the members or ex-members by fixing maximum limit of Rs 75000 in each financial year.

Presenting the HP Legislative Assembly (Allowance and Pension of Members) Amendment Bill 2010 in the assembly, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said that amendment was brought in the present HP Legislative Assembly (Allowance and Pension of Members) Act 1971 on the recommendations made by the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Members Amenities Committee.

He said that it has been deiced to provide more facilities for free transit by the railway or by air or by state transport..

He also said that the pension of ex-members has been raised from Rs 10000 to Rs 14,000 per month to every person who has served for the period of five years and additional pension of Rs 400 to Rs 500 per month for every year in excess of the period of first term. He said that this amendment would entail additional recurring expenditure out of the state exchequer, amounting to Rs 150 lakh per annum approximately.

Sujan Singh Pathania(Cong-Guler) alleged that increase in the pension for ex-MLAs upto Rs 14000 is not sufficient. As owing to the devaluation of currency, the pension of an Ex. member has actually decreased by 25 percent and should be increased up to Rs 20,000, giving the hike of 30 percent.

To this Chief Minister replied that the state government will also be disbursing Dearness allowances(DA) on Rs 14000, which would add up to the increase. This means that 14,000 will be expected to touch the Rs 20,000 figure.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (Cong-Nadon) thanked the Chief Minister for removing the anomalies and demanded that LTA for MLA should be fixed at Rs one lakh per year.

Later the Speaker Tulsi Ram brought the bill for approval which was accepted by the voice vote in the state assembly.
