Shimla: Situated at 8,000 ft from sea level, Asia’s highest high altitude sports training centre at Shilaru, about 55 km from here, got another feather in its cap as Union Sport Minister MS Gill today dedicated the Rs 3.53-crore astro-turf and indoor multipurpose sport hall, besides hostels and medical center to sportspersons in the country. He also announced to build a skiing stadium at Kaza in Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh.

While addressing the gathering at this occasion, Gill pointed out that Indian hockey suffered extensively due to lack of modern sports infrastructure like astro-truf carpeted stadiums, which have otherwise been common around the world since 1975-76. He said that all the stadium and training centers would be equipped with astro-turfs by the Union government.

While replying to a question, Gill said that preparations for the Commonwealth Games were almost complete and the Games would be held according to the schedule. Responding to questions on the controversy over retirement of sports association members, the Union minister said that the court verdict has clarified 70 years as maximum age limit for association members.

He said new couches and trainers would be posted at high the altitude sports center to further upgrade training for sportsmen. Speaking on this occasion, Indian Hockey Association president and Opposition leader in state Vidhan Sabha Vidya Stokes demanded that flowers, apple and other such products from the state should be utilized in the Commonwealth Games to be held at New Delhi. She said that a Sports Stadium is being proposed to be built at Pragtinagar in Kotkhai.
