Shimla: With rising temperature and melting of snow in the high reaches, Lahaul & Spiti district was hit by two huge avalanches on the downstream area near Gomphu during the last 24 hours, thereby creating an artificial lake and blocking a road. However no loss of life has been reported, official said.

An official today said that flow of Chandrbhaga river came to a standstill as high avalanches came down into it from snowbound high reaches of Spiti valley near Gramphu, thereby created a artificial lake yesterday evening.
Another avalanched hit Gramphu-Kaza road last evening and created a thick layer of snow on the already snowbound road. No loss of life and property has been caused by the avalanches, but it further delayed the opening of Keylong-Kaza road, which had been cleared by Himachal Pradesh public works department.
Officials cautioned people and tourists not to venture near the snowline areas as such avalanches could take place due to rise in temperature in the coming days. Meanwhile, there was no report of rainfall from any part of the state, except Dehra Gopipur in Kangra district where 3.2 mm rain was recorded.

  1. With the avalanches taking place near Gramphu will it be possible that Kunjam Pass reopens for vehicular traffic by end of May this year? I intend to cross it by 1st/2nd June.

I have inquired from district headquarter Keylong. The Kunzum Pass fall on Keylong-Kaza road way to Spiti valley and avalnaches hit the road. However it did not delay snow clearance work on Keylong-Leh road.
