Shimla: The Shimla Municipal Corporation today introduced ‘Door-to-door Garbage Collection Scheme’ for the town, with Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal launching the scheme from his official residence, Oakover.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhumal said that ‘Shimla Environment, Heritage Conservation and Beautification (SEHB) Society had been constituted under the aegis of the Municipal Corporation to implement the scheme. He said that ward-level committees had also been constituted in the town to oversee implementation of the scheme by registering every household as its member. To make the campaign a success, every household would be provided yellow dustbins for non-biodegradable waste, i.e. plastic, metal, stone etc. and green dustbins for biodegradable waste, i.e. raw and waste food stuff, paper, etc.

An amount of Rs 50 would be collected from them as security against the dustbins. Every household would be required to store the segregated waste accordingly in the provided dustbins. In addition to this, every household would be paying Rs 50 per month as garbage collection charges to authorised municipal employee who would be visiting every registered household to collect the garbage. Dhumal said that separate fee structure would be applicable for commercial establishments, educational institutions and industries, etc. Biodegradable waste would be used for preparation of organic fertilizer while the non-biodegradable waste after being sorted out would be dumped into land-fill sites.
