First Himachali ‘haat’ to open next month

Shimla: ‘The Destination, a luxury resort situated in the foothills of Solan district on National highway-22 is about to offer a glimpse into Himachali culture and art forms to tourists who daily throng the place as the resort and Himachal Pradesh government have inked an agreement to start a new venture offering Himachali cuisines amid local-made handlooms and handicraft products at the newly-constructed ‘village haat’ near the resort.

While talking to HimVani, The Destination manager (operation), Vishwanath Mishra said that the village ‘haat’ is a unique move to offer tourists a slice of Himachali culture. He said the ‘haat’ will be commissioned from May 1, 2010, and it would run on pilot basis for three months. He said three lakh tourists are being targeted for this venture, which has been designed to diversify the state tourism industry form its monotonous style to give it new dimensions.

He said that about 15 village ‘hats’ have been constructed, made out of locally available material, which would exhibit handicraft, and handlooms along with artisans and in between the mud-made ‘haat’ a Himachali cook would offer ‘Himachali thali’ to tourists.
He said the venture would also provided a market for local artisans to run their livelihood and neither government nor Destination would charge anything from them to sell and promote their products.
