Chamba: Four years after celebrating 1,000 years of its existence, Chamba town has finally been included in the list of national heritage sites. With this, the first formality for getting Unesco heritage status for the town has also been completed. Confirming this, district language officer Prem Sharma said a team from UNESCO would be visiting the town in the next six months to verify the claim.

On the other hand, it is also learnt that UNESCO is also considering special status to Hadimba temple in Manali and the state government is working out modalities to pursue the case. Besides, UNESCO has also shown interest in the Great Himalayan National Park in Kullu. It may be mentioned that last year the Kalka-Shimla railway track was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

  1. Chamba may have been accorded the status of National Heritage site, but the upkeep of the town and its cultural and architechtural heritage is something which the state and the central government need to take care of. The upkeep of the temples and the historic Chaugan is of utmost importance.
