System Failure – Let’s work for solutions

People holding political, economic and social powers drive the whole system according to their suitability. These words by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia seem more relevant in the modern India.

Circuit houses/separate roads/luxury vehicles/separate schools/separate curriculums are only few examples that approve this statement. Different curriculum/boards not only widen the gaps of social opportunity, but also minimize the competition for these elites.  Price rise is no issue for households that have reached a certain level of income. We have double standards for protesting against the system depending upon our suitability. The country is against Maoists after the recent massacre. The people of a country that “let Ganesha drink milk in a day” are hysterical and switch sides immediately. We want Sachin out when he fails to provide India a win and make him the God of Cricket when he makes quick centuries.

The country has good number of panelists who can discuss issues like Mumbai terror attack for days but lack responsible citizens who believe more in actions than words. We need to think rationally and systematically to initiate steps to mend the system.

Remember, If You wish to change the world, start with yourself. I have some suggestions.

1) Identify problem areas in the system along with positive points. Avoid direct and indirect self/system praise. The strengths do not need much of our acclaim except during war but weaknesses are needed to be identified for solutions.

2) Self introspection is needed several times daily to avoid bad behaviour, which contributes to the weakening of the system. It is more important because despite being idealistic, we ourselves commit many mistakes because of being born and brought up in the system.

3) Try your best to build a public opinion. Discuss the issues, problems, solutions in public. Do not push your argument but derive a logical conclusion. Truth always wins. You can write/discuss issues on news blogs/social blogs/newspapers/magazines. This is a very effective medium. Your words may become an arsenal for many readers in their public discussions and multiply in geometric progression.

4) Start with reform movement at state level first. If it succeeds, the country will definitely face the heat.

All our system problems are directly related to bad governance, which is otherwise in the hands of Indian people in the world’s largest democracy. Developing countries cannot see honest politicians/officials unless rule of law exists or there is a provision of minimum social security for all in the system. How can we expect rule of law when the whole system is carried by political, economic and social influence. In the name of democratic decentralization we are creating more hands to eat into public coffers. Justifications by the band wagon of babus and netaas might have a good theoretic backing, but a poor application.

We perhaps do not want to accept this reality of new India and jump to the conclusion to bring in military for the complete wipe out of Naxalism that is affecting about one third of the country. We have only two options. Adjust to the system till you get opportunity or work for the new revolution.
The poem written by Dushyant Kumar will be touching to the people opting for the latter course.
