Dharamsala: As planned earlier, para-sailing over the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium to announce the beginning of a new chapter in the state’s sporting history with the two IPL matches scheduled to be played here would have been the most appropriate start, but that is not to be. Worried over security concerns, HPCA has dropped its plans to make paragliders hover over the stadium just before the first match on April 16.

It may be mentioned that while the HPCA stadium here is already being described as among the most beautiful cricketing locations, the alpine Dhauladhar slopes also offer the best take-off sites for paragliders from all over the world. But unluckily, the adventure sport has been passing through rough weather in the state these days due to various reasons and presence of paragliders hovering over the stadium on national television channels could have helped in making the right impression. HPCA spokesperson Sanjay Sharma confirmed that the plan has been shelved.

Meanwhile, while booking hotel rooms in Dharamsala is proving a Herculean task due to tourist rush, now even match tickets are fast vanishing with 80% tickets already being sold. As of now only the state legislators have been lucky enough as they have been sent special invitations by HPCA.

  1. I dont feel para-sailing by known local pilots can be a security concern .. it would be great to have this event scheduled before cricket match begins.. Himachal is peaceful state, there should not be much worries for para-sailing by expert pilots there. 🙁
