Shimla: Four persons, including a wildlife wing veterinary officer, sustained injuries while they were controlling over two fully-grown leopards that had escaped from their cages at the National Rehabilitation and Rescue Centre in Tutikandi this morning.

Chief Conservator of Forests Sanjeeva Pandey told HimVani that at 6 am today two adult leopards escaped from their enclosure and were seen roaming near the vicinity of the canter when some caretakers saw them. He said that after getting this information, a wildlife team reached the spot and they could trace them in the bushes near the rescue centre after more than two hours of search. “One of them was easily tranquilized with the help of a cartridge-propelled rifle. The other one, which is15-year-old, attacked the caretakers when they were trying to tranquilize her. Four people, including veterinary surgeon Sandeep Rattan, got injuries. But it was captured by giving addition dose of sedatives,” he said.
Pandey disclosed that in an act of bravery, Sandeep Rattan did not allow the beast to release from his grip as it could have attacked children of an orphanage house near the Canter. His one palm was badly injured and was admitted to IGMC along with three others caretakers,” he added.

The department lodged an FIR in this mater and police is investigating the matter. Pandey added that someone played a mischief by opening the locks of the enclosure of the leopards.
“There were three leopards in the enclosure. Somebody opened the locks. Two managed to escape, while the third one, that was captured when it turned man-eater, remained inside the cage,” he said.
