Mandi: The famous Tsechu Buddhist began on the banks of sacred Rewalsar lake on Wednesday. Thousands of Buddhist pilgrims from home and abroad converged at Rewalsar to take part in the fair, which is being celebrated since centuries to commemorate the birth of Guru Padama Sambhava on the tenth of the first month every new year according to the Tibetan calendar. (10th of Dawa Thangpo)

Padama Sambhava had come to Tibet from India and preached Buddhism there in 747 AD. He meditated for many years on the banks of the sacred lake of Rewalsar. Buddhism is deep-rooted in Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur valleys of Himachal Pradesh. It got a new fillip in 1959 when the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso escaped from Tibet with thousands of his devotees and took refuge in Dharamsala and established his capital in exile there at McLeod Ganj.
