Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, would launch a ‘Campaign against Thalassemia’ on the historic Ridge of Shimla on 11th December 2009. He would inaugurate the first Voluntary Blood Donation Camp in a series of four camps to be organized by the Foundation during severe winters. All these camps would be dedicated to the children with Thalassemia. The Chief Minister would also honour the children with visual disabilities for their outstanding achievements in the field of sports. Dr. Rajiv Bindal, Health Minister, would preside over the function.

Ajai Srivastava, Chairman of Umang Foundation, said it would be the first programme in the state to focus on the rights of the children with Thalassemia in which the Chief Minister and Health Minister are to take part. He said during winters in Shimla, there is always acute shortage of blood in the blood banks of the capital city. The children with Thalassemia along with other patients have to suffer a lot due to empty shelves of blood banks.

Keeping in view the sufferings of the patients during severe cold conditions, Umang Foundation would be organizing four blood donation camps in it’s a month long campaign. The second camp is scheduled for 20th December, in association with YMCA Shimla at Christ Church on the Ridge. The third camp would mark the welcome celebrations of the New Year on 1st January, 2010 and the fourth camp would fall on Makar Sankranti, the Hindu festival of donations, he added.
