‘Edu institutions in Himachal to be made open defecation-free’

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh government has expressed interest in exploring the possibility to rope in NGOs, especially Sulabh Shauchalaya International, for making all state-owned educational institutions open defecation-free (ODF) under the Total Sanitation Programme. This was stated by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on the closing ceremony of two-day conference of Rural Development Officers at HIPA, Fairlawn here on Friday

The Chief Minister said that ODF had been considered a major hindrance in environment degradation, which could be checked with ecologically safe and scientific disposal. He said that Sulabh International had been rendering yeoman service in making the places ODF and sanitarily safe. He said that it would help in inculcation of sanitation best habits amongst the young citizens. Dhumal said that MGREGA had vast scope of generating employment to the rural populace while carrying developmental activities at the micro level. He underlined the need for more vigorous implementation of the scheme since there was no fund constraints. He directed the field agencies to get maximum of the job cards prepared and formulate more number of mini and micro level developmental schemes which would not only create infrastructure but also generate employment to the people.
