HP launches fresh monkey sterilisation drive

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh forest minister J P Nadda said today invormed the state assembly that the government has launched a fresh sterilisation drive to check the population of monkeys. Claiming that simians are a big menace for farmers and horticulturists, he said the state government felt sterilisation was a better solution than shooting the animals and hurting religious sentiments.

He that there are over 3.17 lakh monkeys and more than 53,000 langoors in the state as per a census carried out in three stages during 2003-04. So far, a total of 7,201 monkeys have been sterilised using LASER technique at a cost of Rs 2.45 crore, he said adding the target is to achieve 60,00 sterilisation every year.

Two new sterilisation centres have been recently opened at Sastar in Hamirpur and Gopalpur in Kangra, besides the one at Tutikandi in Shimla. Another centre at Basal in Una district would start functioning soon, he added.
