Ski Village: Locals to be heard without DPR in their hand

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government appears to be in a hurry to settle the fate of $300 million Himalayan Ski Village, proposed to be set up in Manali. According to reports, a high level committee set up to examine the project has decided June 6 as the day for hearing public grievances against the project, even as the company is yet to submit its detailed project report.

While the committee, headed by tourism secretary Manisha Nanda is already camping in Manali, local people opposing the project have complained that it would not be possible to highlight the problem areas unless they have the DPR in their hand.

The high-level committee has already quizzed the promoters of the Himalayan Ski Village Company on issues relating to the environment, land, local rights and use of natural resources on issues like change of land use and clearances that the company has to obtain under Section 118 of the HP Tenancy and Land Reforms Act. The company had earlier also been questioned about the specific location of the project, utilisation of the slopes and tapping of natural resources like water, about which there is ambiguity in the initial proposal.

I am sure in the years to come there would be no snow for skiing, no water to drive the hydroelectric projects, no shade from the sun and the people of the hill state would have to suffer the wrath of mother nature. Happy deforestation and development, thanks to the ignorance of the people and brilliance of the government system.
