Shimla: What could prove to be a valiant effort of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) to promote “healthy academic atmosphere” in the campus, the varsity administration on Wednesday decided to introduce the internal assessment system in post-graduate classes in the campus. The academic council of the varsity in its meeting held here has decided to introduce this system from the 2009-10 session.

The students in Himachal Pradesh University will now have to be more regular in the classes, be more careful in their behaviour, attention and seriousness regarding studies because all this will be add up in the internal assessment marks. The HPU campus has notably been infamous for student clashes and violence on campus in the past. The new system will definitely means a decrease of active participation of students in campus politics, which remains the main cause of clashes between different student organizations. Talking to HimVani, Vice-chancellor Prof Sunil Kumar Gupta said that the Academic Council of the varsity has also decided to introduce entrance test for the admission to M.Phil classes as per the new guidelines of the UGC rules, except for journalism and visual arts. “As far as the decision to introduce internal assessment system is concerned, we have followed the UGC guidelines and I hope this would help us in enabling study-favoring atmosphere in the campus,” he said.

But the decision has not gone down well with Student Central Association (SCA) of the campus. “This decision will definitely hamper the democratic platform on campus as students will now be refrained from raising their issues before the administration,” the SCA president said. She said that the SCA and SFI would hold an aggravated protest against it if the administration doesn’t reconciles its decision. However, the secretary of Students’ Council backed by ABVP, Vivek Dogra, said, “We welcome the decision but at the same time we demand that the methodology for the internal assessment should be clear and transparent.”

Further, the Academic Council also approved changes in the syllabus of Information Technology and Computers. In addition, the curriculum for Masters in Computer Application (MCA), Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) and MA Mathematics will also be revised before the commencement of the new session. It has also decided to introduce M.Phil in the subjects of Mathematics and Education through ICDEOL from the next academic session.

  1. The bold initiative taken by former VC Anil Wilson in introducing internal assessment at the UG level is already showing positive results. It is good that this initiative has been taken to its logical conclusion to the PG level. The remarks of SCA President only shows her immaturity and the university authorities would do well to ignore this.

  2. <div align=justify>Taming the HPU is not an easy task. This University is famous for everything but academics. The SCA chief has already given dissent to this ruling. One fails to understand what democratic set up she is talking about when there is no threat to the democracy anywhere in the country. Probably she is more concerened about the hooligan element in the University who have made rowdism their career. Heavens will not fall if student elections are banned in the state. What purpose they serve?? In other part of the world, it is the jail stint which turn ordinary people into criminals whereas in Himachal, it is the University stint which is turning our youth into criminals. What is the use of such education system as when a student leaves the campus he has 4-5 criminal cases lodged against him affecting his future prospects. High time, students at the HPU Campus realise, that they are here for studies which is grossly subsidised because of the taxes we ordinary citizens pay. No point wasting our hard earned money!!</div align=justify>
