HPMC lets apples worth crores rot in godown

Shimla: A lot has been said about setting cold storages in the state, nothing much seems to have happened on the ground. As per sources in HPMC, about 5602.38 metric tones of apple procured under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) has rotten this year, causing loss worth crores of rupees to the government.
While sources said bad weather has been the main reason for this as disruption in road links led to the apple belt being cut off, almost no effort seems to have been taken to take these factors into consideration.
It has also been alleged that during September and October there was a glut-like situation in the market as dealers refused to buy the crop, which forced grower to sell the stock to the government under the MIS for Rs. 5.75 per kilogramme, and then the apples were left to rot in HPMC godowns.
