Flood alert in Shimla, Bilaspur, Kinnaur

HimVani
Shimla: Following widespread rains in Himachal Pradesh over the last one week, the state government today sounded a flood alert in three districts - Shimla, Kinnaur and Bilaspur. People living in low-lying areas adjoining Satluj have been asked to move to safer places as the river is in spate.
Earlier, the state government had asked the Centre to extend a financial help of Rs 734.54 crore to meet damage caused by heavy rains in the state. The government had claimed that as many as 146 people had lost their lives as a result of heavy rains in the state. Besides, orchardists and farmers had been worst-hit by the ongoing heavy downpour, which had also caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, public and private properties. Due to excessive water in the Bhakra reservoir, authorities have also opened seven of the nine floodgates to allow the water to flow downstream, which may also cause flooding in the plains.

The rains have created havoc in Shimla hills. Almost all link roads in Kotagrh, Kumarsain, Nankhari and Baggi area and the outer Seraj area of Distt Kullu, namely Dalash, Arsu, Nirmand have been affected by landslides. As a result apple growers are not able to send there produce to the market. Today was the sixth consecutive day of the rainfall. There was a major landslide today afternoon on NH-22 at Nangal Devi near Theog around 6 pm and the traffic was disrupted for almost 2 1/2 hours. Hopefully, PWD is geared for the repair work once the rains stops.
