Bridge the gap between univ and farming community: Dr Dhiman

Addressing media persons after assuming charge as the new vice-chancellor of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Dr. K.R. Dhiman said he would focus on improving horticulture produce, provide qualitative education facility to state youth and bridge the gap between university and the farming community.
Dhiman said apple was the mainstay of the agrarian economy of the state and there was urgent need to strengthen apple industry by popularizing the colonel root stock, rejuvenation of old orchard in a phased manner along with diversification with other fruits. He said not only the apple belt, the mid and low hill areas of the state should also be identified for the production of other fruit crops.
Dr. Dhiman said rain harvesting should be popularized as the most of the areas in state were rain-fed and its prudent use would play a pivotal role in improving farm production.
“The university will play a crucial role in varietals development and refinement of production technology of off-season vegetable and flowers had gained momentum and required refinement and back up to the grower in which university would play important role.
About cultivation of herbal and medicinal plants, Dr. said that indigenous and demand driven production should be encouraged. He also said the state could also be good producer of selective organic farm produce.
Dr. Dhiman further added that all the Krishi Vigyan Kendras and regional research state of the university would be utilized to optimal level for the benefit of farming community and faster transfer of technology would be made.
