Shimla: In a major decision that could have widespread on-ground affect on the healthcare delivery mechanisim in Himachal Pradesh, the state health department has directed non-governmental oranisations not to carry out any kind of immunization programme.
In a letter sent to all block level medical officers, the health director has issued order that no NGO should be involved in carrying out immunization.
It is pertinent to mention that in February the health department had found a Mumbai-based NGO carrying out Hepatitis B vaccination in schools, allegedly without following the set procedures. A police case was also registered against the NGO for flouting rules.
The health department also admitted that a NGO was granted permission to carry out immunization against certain diseases in 2006 but the agency is yet to complete the work. Considering these instances, the department has not decided to go alone in carrying out immunization in the state.
