Shimla: Around 2,000 single women from all over Himachal Pradesh today started off on a foot march from Dhami to Shimla to press the government to safeguarding their interests so that they may lead a self-reliant and dignified life.
Lead by Rajkumari from Dharamshala, who is fighting for the survival for her 28-year-old blind daughter, the participants include widows, deserted, divorced, separated and destitute women from all over the state.
The women, under the banner of Ekanl Nari Shakti Sangathan, covered 14 kilometers on the first day of the three-day march and halted at Nehra today.
Summing up their demands, Nirmal Chandel, State Coordinator of Ekanl Nari Shakti Sangathan, said “We are demanding independent status for single woman in Himachal, a separate ration card for poor single women, free medical aid, land rights for women in the tribal areas and also allotment of cultivable land to those who can cultivate.”
Subhash Mendhapurkar, Director of SUTRA, the voluntary organisation which mobilized women under ENSS umbrella, said, “It is high time the government recognizes this problem and its magnitude and gives it at least 0.05 per cent share of GDP. And this is what we will look from the government when the Yatra culminates outside the Vidhan Sabha on April 3.”
