HimVani

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Voluntary Health Association of India (HP-VHAI) and American Cancer Society would launch a joint campaign for enforcement of anti-smoking law in Shimla. The advocacy plan with the government and public, beginning with schools, would take off in April with an aim to make Shimla a totally smoke free town, to be second such after Chandigarh.
Informing about the proposed campaign Chairman of the HP-VHAI Narender Sharma, said that on the basis of a recent survey conducted in Shimla, which shows that 80 per cent people feel the need for such a campaign, we have decided to go ahead to initially educate the schools and aware government authorities about the provisions of the Tobacco Control Act -2003.
Sriniwas Joshi, special consultant on the campaign with the HPVHAI and Hemant Goswami of Burning Brain Society quoted several studies held earlier in Himachal, emphasizing the need to control tobacco use in form of cigarettes in public places and preventing the youth for falling into the trap.
