Himachal govt demands CNG buses

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh government is exploring the possibility of introducing CNG-run buses in plain areas of the state. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today requested the Centre to supply cheap CNG fuel to the state to run clean buses in the lower areas of the state.
Dhumal met Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and demanded introduction of CNG-run buses/tempos/taxis in the state on the pattern of National Capital Region so as to minimise the transportation cost, and to help control pollution caused by diesel/petrol vehicles. He said CNG buses could be successfully plied in Sirmour, Solan, Bilaspur, Una, Kangra and Hamirpur districts, which have comparatively plain areas in comparison to other parts of the state.
The Chief Minister said the state government had imposed complete ban on felling of green trees in the state as result of it, the environment and water quality had considerably improved in northern Indian. He added that introduction of clean fuel for transport sector would further strengthen the government’s efforts to improve air quality in north India. He told the Union Petroleum Minister that all habitations with a population more than 500 people would be connected with all-weather road by the end of 2009, and added that construction of 3,000 kilometre motorable roads besides metalling and tarring on 3,500 kilometre roads will be undertaken in the state during eleventh Five Year Plan. He said that a target has been fixed to provide connectivity to 200 villages during the eleventh Five Year Plan. He said 1m260 buses would be purchased during eleventh plan period and added that out of these 300 buses would be purchased during 2008-2009 plan period.
The Petroleum Minister appreciated the state government’s plan to introduce CNG buses in Himachal Pradesh and told that the Centre would consider the proposal in positive spirit and direct the authorities to work in time-bound manner on this proposal.
