Shimla:
Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies (SDRS), Himachal Pradesh Chapter, on the eve of World Disability Day, will honour sixty disabled children for their special achievements in different fields. The function will be held on December 2, 2007 in YMCA Hall, Shimla. Manisha Nanda, Chief Electoral Officer of the state, will be the chief guest. She will give away the cash rewards citations and special gifts  to the little champions. B M Nanta, Director Primary Education and Mission Director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, HP will preside over the function. Two teachers of the disabled children, Deep Ram Sharma and Maya Ram Sharma will also be honoured for their services. This function is supported by YMCA, Shimla.

According to Ajai Srivastava, Chairman of SDRS, the disabled children of School for the Visually and Hearing Impaired, Dhalli, Shimla have won laurels for the state in the field of sports and tracking at national level. But these little champions remain unnoticed as the the so called main stream of the society does not count them as its part. He said that recently, the blind students of the school won 11 gold, seven silver and one bronze medal in the 4th National Athletics Championship, which was held at Ludhiana recently. Blind students from  more than 21 states and union territories participated in the championship and Anil Sharma of Shimla was declared the best athlete at the meet. But their historic achievements were totally ignored by the state authorities. It is an irony that even the governor of Himachal Pradesh did not take pain to congratulate these kids, although he is the head of the institution by virtue of post.

Ajai Srivastava said that on this occasion, 10 mentally retarded, 20 blind and 30 deaf children will be honoured. The purpose of the programme is to bring these unsung heroes of the society in the mainstream. This will be the second programme of its kind in Himachal Pradesh. Earlier on March 10, 2007, the SDRS had honoured the special kids in a big function at Shimla.
