Shimla: SUTRA, a prominent Jagjit Nagar (near Kasauli) based NGO in Himachal Pradesh, working for gender equality in the region has been chosen for the prestigious Bhoomijal Samvardhan Purskar 2007.

The award is being presented to the NGO for their commendable work in construction of roof water collection tanks in schools in the region. This water is later used for toilets.

“We all know that the government has constructed toilets in schools without paying adequate attention to water supply and this has resulted in dirty unusable toilets,” says Subhash Mendhapurkar, the head of the NGO.

Under a government aided programme, SUTRA has so far constructed 19 tanks each one having capacity between 50 to 80 thousand litres.

“This has made toilets usable and the children, especially girl children are relieved,” says Mendhapurkar.

The award consists of a citation of Rs 1,00,000.

Dhian Singh, the programme coordinator will receive the award on behalf of SUTRA from Pratibha Patil, President of India, on September 11 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

  1. Heartiest congratulations to SUTRA. This is a remarkable achievement for a Himachali NGO. Such efforts must be appreciated by all people including the beurocrates who in general has scant respect for NGO movement.
