RitaShimla: Rita, a resident of Krishna Nagar, Shimla, who had been suffering from kidney failure and was under treatment in Post Graduate Institute (PGI), Chandigarh, succumbed to her ailment yesterday.

The Chairman of Himachal Chapter of Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies (SDRS), Ajai srivastava who had earlier appealed for an O+ve (O positive) kidney donor for the 25-year old poor woman, informed that as no donor could not be found on time, all prayers to save her life went futile.

HimVani through its website had also appealed for a kidney donor and monetary help. While many had come forward to provide monetary help, no kidney donor could be found. HimVani had received a couple of emails – of which HimVani still has copies, and shared with Srivastava – to volunteer to be a kidney donor, but only for some monetary price. HimVani had taken a stand not to encourage organ selling, hence the requests were not forwarded to Rita’s family.

HimVani mourns the death of Rita and regrets, it could not do enough to save her life and reach out to people who could have been possible kidney donors.

Srivastava informed that while Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh had assured to meet the total expenses – of about Rs 2 lakh – of the transplant from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, it’s the wait for a donor that took the toll on Rita.
