50% of life saving drugs manufactured in Himachal

Solan: Playing a major role in the production of life saving drugs in the country, Central Research Institute, Kasauli manufactured over six crore injections in the year 2006-07.

The information was given by Dr Dharam Skaktu, Deputy Director General, Health Services, Govt of India, while addressing a gathering of scientists and officials at a function organised to celebrate the completion of 101 years of the institute.

The institute was set up in 1905.

He said that the institute was only of its kind in the entire South Asian region and injections for brain fever for the entire country were being manufactured at this centre only.

Earlier, Dr R K Maini, Director of the institute presented the annual report and said that about 50 per cent of the live saving injections in the country were being made here. Some of the injections manufactured are for brain fever, jaundice, tetanus, diphtheria, tuberculosis, rabies and anti-snake venom.

Dr Maini said that in the past few year classes for B.Sc, M.Sc and microbiology were being organised in the institute. The institute is also planning to hold classes for researchers as well in the future.
