Medal winners to be awarded on Statehood Day

Shimla (Nov 29): Himachal Pradesh government would honour and award cash prizes to medal winners of Commonwealth and Asiad Games on Statehood Day Function on January 25, 2011. This was revealed by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal here today.

He said the state government had decided to give a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh for winning gold medal, Rs 5 lakh for silver medal and Rs 3 lakh for bronze medal in Commonwealth Games by any of the participants hailing from Himachal Pradesh. Subedar Vijay Kumar, hailing from district Hamirpur, had won three gold medals and one silver medal in different shooting events in the 19th Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, Samresh Jung, hailing from district Sirmour, won one silver and one bronze Medal in shooting events while Meena Kumari of Bilaspur, won one bronze medal in rifle shooting in the Commonwealth Games.

Vijay Kumar had also won two bronze medals and Sonia Rai, hailing to Baijnath, one silver in pistol shooting competition in the Asian Games. The Chief Minister said that Vijay Kumar would get a cash prize of Rs 41 lakh (Rs 35 lakh for Commonwealth Games and Rs 6 lakh for Asiad); Samresh Jung Rs 8 lakh for Commonwealth Games, Meena Kumari Rs 3 lakh and Sonia Rai would get Rs 5 lakh.
