Manali-Leh highway officially closes for vehicular traffic from tomorrow

Manali: The only terrestrial link to tribal Lauhal Spiti district of Himachal pradesh through 475 km long Manali-Leh highway would now be officially closed for all vehicular traffic from November 15, 2010 due to the onset of winters in the state. While talking to Himvani over phone Lahaul Spiti district official spokesman, Sher Singh said that 8 posts of Border Roads Organisation(BRO) comprising of 2000 workers and 60 officials on the highway would leave the highway form 15 November 2010 for their winter break. He said that currently there is no snow on the road but in wake of further snow it would not be opened by BRO, as most of officials have either left the snow posts or are likely to from tomorrow onwards. He suggested to the people not to venture on this snow prone road as snow could pour anytime.

While talking to Himvani, Commander, 38, BRTF, A.K. Dikshit, said that the BRO had received a request from the state government to keep the Manali-Sarchu road open till November 15, 2010. The opening of the 13050 ft high Rohtang pass for more days had brought great relief to the people of the Lahaul and Spiti valley who remained snowbound for more than five months.
