Dharamsala: A group of three astrologers living in rented premises at Sidhbari near Gyuto monastery, on the outskirts of Dharamsala, left their followers in the soup, duping them of gold ornaments worth lakhs.

The landlady of the house where the group lived told HimVani that they had come there a month ago, and in spite of her repeated request to get police verification done they did not do so. They had assured her that they would get it done on September 22, but to her surprise she saw the accommodation vacated without even the rent being paid.

According to Kanta Devi, a victim, said their head had introduced himself as astrologer Arjun Sharma. Their modus operandi was to take innocent people into confidence assuring rich financial gains and getting rid of all their problems by worshipping their ornaments at the ‘astrology centre’. As a result, people who believed them gave their entire valuables, and to their surprise when some of them returned to collect the ornaments the astrologers were nowhere to be seen.

According to sources, the ‘babas’ had at least 30 followers including some rich and known persons from the area. It is estimated that they left the locals poorer by about Rs 15 to 20 lakh.
