Panchayat elections in Himachal by year end

Shimla. Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that elections to Panchayati Raj institutions in Himachal Pradesh would be held before the end of this year as present term of local self government is ending on January 23, 2011.

Disclosing about preparedness for ensuing Panchayati Raj election in the State, Himachal Pradesh Election Commission Chief Dev Swaroop said that draft of electoral roll would be completed till Sep 20th. He further added that it is preparing electoral roll as door to door verification work of addition and deletion in the ECI electoral roll is being conducted. He said that those who have attained age of 18 years on January,1, 2010 would be eligible for enrolment in the new electoral rolls.

He said that this would be third elections under State Election Commission as earlier state governments in the country were being conducting Panchayati Raj bodies election but now State Election Commission under the supervision of ECI conducts this process.

Mr. Swaroop said that elections would be conducted jointly in the snowbound and normal areas except Pangi Subdivision of Chamba district as per the High Court orders. For the first time State Election Commission would take affidavit form the head of family to check duplication of votes. He said that State Election Commission has released new family format to take the detail of voters, which now has signed declaration of family head that none of the family members is registered elsewhere.

He said new Panchayat Electoral Rolls would include the Election ID card Number and house number to further check the duplication of voters in more than one place. Himachal Pradesh has about 3243 panchayats and about 17000 representative would be elected through this election process.
