Shimla: A new milestone was added to the pioneer health institution of the State, Indira Gandhi Medical College today when the Chief Minister, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal dedicated projects worth Rs. 17.16 crore to the people of the State. These included Telecobalt Unit installed at a cost of Rs. 3.40 crore; 64 Slice MDCT Machine, the First of its kind in South East Asia, installed at a cost of Rs. 6.56 crore. He also inaugurated the First Nursing College in the Government Sector named as Sister Nivedita Government Nursing College and laid the foundation stone of new college complex to be constructed at a cost Rs. 5.20 crore, Married Doctors Hostel at Corstophen estimated to cost Rs. 1.60 crore and dedicated First Eye Bank costing Rs. 40 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, said that IGMC had emerged the First Medical College and Hospital in entire South East Asian region for having started the latest 64 slice MDCT Machine to fasten up the scanning process of the body parts. He said that the new machine was capable of scanning the complete human body within ten seconds and 30 CT scans of the patients would be possible every day. He said that radiation exposure would be considerably low as compared to existing old machines and the facility of angiography, bronchography, enterography and colonography etc. would be possible with the new set up. He also pointed out that the new machine was capable of doing triple rule out scan to visualize the coronary arteries, pulmonary arteries and aorta with single injection to the patient with acute chest pain while in stroke patients, the brain perfusion study could be done in one setting to assess the salvageable parts of brain. He further said that the machine had 3D reconstruction of the scan facility to provide better visualization of the body parts which was an added feature of the machine.
Chief Minister said that the Telecobalt Unit machine installed in the First Regional Cancer Centre in the country would be convenient for the patients and operating technical staff having advantage of high standard and quality will be able to conduct radiotherapy with precision. He said that Rs. 3.40 crore had been spent over addition of Telecobalt Unit in the Cancer Hospital which was a cost effective radiotherapy machine with minimum running cost and maintenance etc. He said that the machine was capable of treating 120 to 130 patients daily compared to 60 to 65 daily earlier thereby exhausting the waiting list of patients. Prof. Dhumal also inaugurated the First Eye Bank in IGMC in collaboration with Eye Bank of Government Medical College, Chandigarh, to the people of the State established at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh and said that henceforth eye donation, processing, preservation and transplantation of cornea facilities would be available in the Bank.
