Shimla: At least 24 people are feared killed and 30 others injured as a private bus on way from Shernoth to Shimla, on the Chhaila-Theog highway, fell down the hill this afternoon around 4.15 pm, police source said.

The accident reported occurred as the private bus was overspending while crossing a narrow patch. SP Shimla RM Sharma rushed to the spot after the mishap. He said prima facie it seemed that the bus suddenly stopped while ascending and the driver lost control as its brakes failed. The bus fell into a gorge. He said the rescue operation is almost over.

Eyewitnesses said the road was slushy due to the ongoing World Bank-funded road widening project being undertaken there by Longjian Road and Bridge Company Ltd of China.

Congress leader Vidya Stokes, who reached the spot, told HimVani that the condition of the roads in the area was bad due to recent rains and heavy movement of the trucks for transportation of apples these days. Horticulture Minister Narender Bragta also reached the scene to monitor relief and rescue operation.

On Wednesday evening, 39 people, including 22 women and nine children, were killed and an equal number injured in Mandi district when an overcrowded truck skidded off the road and fell into a gorge.

    • They do not have choice. Everyone is not as fortunate as some of us who own cars. One is not safe even in those "not so overloaded' vehicles due to the condition of the roads. The government needs to ensure that the spending priorities are set correctly and the public money is used for improving the conditions of the roads and public transport system.

My heart goes to the families who lost their dear ones in this calamity.

  1. Guys please be very careful while reporting accidents

Even after correcting the headline from 26 to now 22 dead, the text of the story says that 26 bodies have been recovered.

Please do not try and sensationalize human tragedy

    • thanks for pointing out the mistake Ravinder ji. But be sure, one of the primary aim of himvani is to rid news from sensationalisation.

  3. Time has come to reorient our transport policy. Strict measures to tame private transporters is need of the hour. There is no check on the company and contractors involved in this project. Shimla Hatkoti highway, the life line of apple belt or upper Shimla area, is in harrowing condition. Frequency of accidents has increased many time in last couple of months. Mr Bragta should commute from Shimla to Hatkoti at least once in a weak to know the ground reality. Frequency and duration of traffic jams have crossed all limits on this route. It seems concerned ministers( Transport and Horticulture) are still sleeping.
Ravender ji at least grill these insensitive concerned authorities (Ministers) in the press conference. May god bless peace to all departed souls.
