Cold waves continue in Himachal; Keylong records 6.5 degree Celsius below zero

Mercury went down to minus 6.5 degree Celsius at Keylong, the district headquarter of Lahaul Spiti in Himachal Pradesh after plummeting the night temperature about 4.6 degrees down the normal. The report arriving here said the gateway to Lahaul Spiti 13050 ft high Rohtang Pass received fresh snowfall during the day today. The Met office said here today that Keylong was coldest of this winter season as it recorded minus 6.5 degrees dip that of minus 5.4 degrees of yesterday. Similarly, Kalpa in Kinnaur was low at minus two degrees and about 2.7 degrees down the normal.

District Administration Kullu which is assisting in the rescue operation to evacuate the stranded people in Koksar and Udaipur said that fresh snowfall experienced on the Rohtang pass hammered the rescue operation. Lahaul Spiti and few part of Kullu are under thick blanked by clouds due to feeble western disturbances were having snow blizzard for last five to six days. The entire Lahaul and Spiti valleys were under the thick blankets of snowfall and normal lives are out of track.

Heavy machinery was deployed by the district administration Kullu, Lahaul Spiti and BRO could open the snowbound roads. The mobile and telephone communication also disrupted today as people were facing hardship to know about the freezing cold conditions. Early winter in the valley also disrupted the normal lives as people were currently exporting out Potato and Green Pea from the Lahaul valley. As many as six dozen local roads were also disrupted by the snowfall and snowstorms in the district.

Tourist resort Manali was low at 1.2 degrees, Sundernagar in Mandi and Bhuntar in Kullu recorded three degrees each, Solan and Chamba 4.4 degrees, Dalhousie 4.6 degrees, Palampur 4.7 degrees, Mandi six degrees, Kangra 6.4 degrees, Shimla and Una 6.5 degrees each. A minimum temperature of Hamirpur 7.3 degrees, Dharamshala 7.4 degrees, Bilaspur eight degrees and Nahan nine degree respectively. The Met office forecast mainly dry weather in the state in next 24 hrs. It said that a western disturbance would become active after Nov 25.
