39 killed in private bus accident in Himachal

About 39 people were killed when a private bus (HP-66-1538) dived into Beas river yesterday evening at Jhiri, near Aut, about 15 km from Kullu.

S.P. Mandi R.S. Negi said this morning that accident toll rose to 39 as more bodies were recovered overnight and this morning, while two to three people are still reported missing in the turbulent river where mishap occurred.

The bus was carrying about 60 people, and  most of the casualties occurred due to drowning as the bus overturned in the swollen river.

Official said that among 39 deceased, 17 were women and three were children. He said that 18 persons were injured in the accident out of which two are critical and have been rushed to PGI Chandigarh, while two are admitted at zonal hospital Kullu for treatment, rest were given discharge after giving them first aid.

The preliminary police investigation revealed human negligence behind this mishap. S.P. said that errant driver Ankush was absconding soon after the accident. Cause of accident was over speeding the vehicle and hearing mobile phone calls. The police has started searching for him soon after the mishap, who had reportedly jumped out of bus before mishap occurred.
