Snow storm hit life in Himachal; many roads snowbound

Snow storm hit life in Himachal Pradesh as many roads became snowbound after overnight inclement weather accompanied with heavy snowfall and rain in the state forcing the people to remain captive and home bound.

Manali registered about 25 cm snowfall disrupting Chandigarh-Manali national highway no. 21 between Patlikhual and Manali town. There are reports of heavy to very heavy snowfall in rest of Kullu district and rain lashed down streams. Report arriving from Lahaul & Spiti district said that  Keylong had about 30 cm snowfall, Koksar and Kaza had 60 cm each, Rohtang Pass, Kunzum Pass, Baralachha, Sacch Pass also registered 5 to 6 feet fresh snowfall which is heaviest of this season. High reaches of Kinnuar, Kangra, Chamba and Mandi district also reported heavy snowfall and rain in the down stream. Report arriving from Pangi  in Chamba district said that heavy snowfall is continuing as 60 cm snowfall has been already occurred. Tourist resorts Shimla, Kufri, Chail, Mashobra, Fagu and Narkanda also experienced spell of moderate to heavy snowfall. Shimla had 10 cm snowfall, Kufri and Fagu 40 cm each, Chail and Mashobra 7-8 cm and Narkanda 60 cm.

Hindustan-Tibet Highway no. 22 became snowbound between Shimla upto Narkanda forcing the district administration to divert vehicular traffic via Dhami to Kinnuar and Rampur district. However vehicular traffic was through between Kalka to Shimla on this highway but many internal roads in Shimla town were snowbound.  Snowstorm also affected supply of essential commodity like milk products, vegetables and news papers in Shimla and Manali. People braving extreme cold wave and snowstorm amid interpreted power supply remained home bound, however life is almost captive in the parts of upper Shimla where most of the roads were snowbound. The state highway Theog-Gumma, Jubbal and Kotkhai and Rohru had been snowbound since yesterday morning and no vehicular traffic is on the road. The cold wave and foggy weather was also keeping life out of track in the middle hills and plains having continous rainfall since last 24 hours. The intermittent snowfall was also experienced in number of middle hills along with light rain showers.

The Met office has forecast heavy snow and rain in many parts of Himachal Pradesh for Jan 17, 18 and weather is overcast today.
