Research in Industrial use of hemp fiber is required: Governor

The representatives of Bombay Hemp Company called on Governor Acharya Devvrat at Rajbhawan today and gave the presentation on utilizing Industrial Hemp as a strategic asset devoted to the reformation of agriculture & boosting its role in the economy along with uplifting socio-economic standards of local farmers.

 

The Governor had visited Malana village in Kullu district last month and had spoken about possibilities of alternative use of hemp in industry. In this regard, the representatives of the company today called on and apprised him about the detailed project. They have aimed to provide platform for grassroots advocacy, scientific discovery & commercial implementation of an Industrial Hemp ecosystem for the benefit of local farmers. They apprised that hemp fibre was cultivated from plants belonging to the Cannabis genus with two varieties named Industrial hemp and marijuana.

 

Marijuana typically contains 3-15% of the psychoactive ingredient called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on a dry-weight basis, while industrial hemp generally has less than 0.3% of THC. The Governor assured him of research at University level so that it could be used for various industrial products that will benefit farmers of the State.
