JP workers union waging battle on charges of utter violation of labor norms by JP company (runs 1000 MW Karcham Wangtu and 300 MW Baspa -II, project in Kinnnuar district) today extended an unconditional support by state unit of CITU to join call of people’s movement against firm which was suppose to start from Feb 24, 2014.

Addressing media persons here on today state unit CITU, vice president Mr. Rakesh Singha confirmed that it has decided to extend support to the JP workers union on the issues of the workers and farmers of Kinnaur district. The Union has been already served 14 points demand charter on October 15, 2014 however the management of power firm did not consider it due to which the workers have been protesting since January 14, 2014.

Terming the JP company ruthless and having no regard for labor norms,  left leaders alleged that 38 days after the protest company has still not show any consideration to address their demands all of which are legitimate and within the framework of law. “We want to give a blanket assurance to the state government and local administration that the scheduled protest would be based upon the constitutional methods, peaceful and within the constitutional framework. With so much unrest amongst the local people of project affected areas CITU has appealed the state government to wake up to their genuine grievances.Mr. Singha accused the firm for not only blatant violation or labour laws and enhancement of basic pay to the company workers, however utter violation of norms are being done at every step since the beginning of  construction on the projects till  commissioning” as confirmed by Mr. Rakesh Singha.

The mindset of the company is evident from the fact that it was not able to digest even the registration of the workers union under the provisions of trade union act of 1926 and has filed a writ petition praying for deregistration of the union. The workers had been demanding for salary at par with adjoining hydro power companies like Sanjay Jal Vidhyut Pariyojna and Satluj Jal Vidhyut Nigam Limited besides implementation of labour laws.

Mr. Singha said the JP management must realize that it is not working in Europe of 16th century, where there were no laws for working class and exploitation of labour by capital that was very acute. He warned the company to either implement the laws of the land or alternatively quit as there will be no other path available for the management to take.
