Road safety drive with Gandhigiri

The state transport authority toiling with the frequent road mishaps has made a pioneering initiative here today after implying ‘Gandhigiri’ to attract attention of drivers towards road safety norms.

 Regional Transport Officer Shimla, Mr. Prashant Destra today welcomed the drivers of vehicles in his office with red roses and flowers to draw their attention and seek cooperation for this cause. The week long drive will kick off at respective RTO offices in the state from January 11 to Jan 17, 2015 with a motive to enlighten various stakeholders and public in general about road rules and safety norms besides rendering comfortable and safe services in the transport services.

 Some special eye camps were also held to check the eyesight of drivers on this occasion, as it would avert more loss of life. During the drive necessary papers of 400 vehicles were checked after setting various nakas where information materials will also circulated. This drive will be dedicated each day for single cause to educate masses for increasing use of a Helmet and a seatbelt during journey, and to reduce overloading and securing of proper licenses after learning driving.

 The road accidents claim as many as 1.50 lakh lives in the country each year including about 1100 Himachal alone. The experts are invited to address a workshop on Jan 17, 2015 to disseminate more information on the implementation of traffic norms and take further steps to avoid more loss of human live in accidents. The state figures reveal that more than 6442 lives were lost and 31457 were injured in more than 17149 fatal road accidents in last six years.
