Three medical colleges to come up in Himachal

Bringing up number of state run medical colleges from three to six, three new medical colleges to come up soon in this hill state.

Informing media persons about the development of one and half years of Congress rule in the state, Health and Revenue Minister Kaul Singh Thakur said that three medical colleges would be set up with the outlay of Rs. 189 crore by the centre as land has been identified by the state at Nahan in Sirmaur district, Chamba town and Hamirpur.

Hailing the efforts of former Union Minister Gulam Nabi Azad and last UPA government Mr. Thakur said that state would have three more medical colleges which could be made operational within one year. He said that these medical colleges would come up within ten kilometers of the main towns.

State currently have three medical colleges including IGMC Shimla, Dr. Rajinder Prasad Medical College Tanda and ESI Medical College Mandi, having about 400 seats of MBBS and 100 seats of PG and MS doctors.

In order to upgrade the IGMC and Tanda Medical college and hospital and to overcome the shortcomings found out by the team of MCI, centre has allocated enough funds to both of the medical colleges.

He said that two hospitals having hundred bedded medical facility would come up in Shimla and Mandi as Kamla Nehru hospital, Shimla and zonal hospital Mandi would be declared mother and child hospitals in the state. Mr. Azad have inaugurated this hospital at Mandi as these two would come up with central assistance of Rs. 17.50 crore each.

Under facility based new born care, 89 delivery points have been made functional with new born care corners. 13 special new born care units (newborn ICUs) were made functional at district hospitals and both medical colleges in the state. 8 new born stabilization units were also made functional.

Two nutritional rehabilitation centers were made functional at IGMC Shimla and Dr. RPGMC Tanda for treatment of malnourished children up to age of five years. Similarly, tertiary care cancer hospitals would come up in the state as it would be setup at IGMC Shimla and Mandi.

Government in no time will be starting the service of dedicated drop back ambulances called 102 for expecting mothers and children till the age of one year. There will be 125 such vehicles deployed at all the 116 delivery points in the state.

  1. The issue is quality of medical education. 
    When the state struggles to find enough specialist doctors for faculty of two medical colleges, what will be the situation if three more are made. I fear all specialists of District hospitals and other hospitals will move to these medical colleges and secondary health care will collapse.
