Two days long 10th All India National Open Ice Skating Championship concludes here today. The championship was organised by the Shimla Ice Skating Club and the Ice Skating Association of India, the participants were seen displaying their skills in figure and speed skating.

About 200 skaters from 12 Indian states including foreign participants took part in the event, said the President of Ice Skating Association of India, Bhavnesh Banga. He also said,”This is the 10th National Ice Skating Championship. This will be going on for two days. We have more than 200 participants and about 12 states are participating, including Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, we also have events of figure skating and speed skating.”

The participants were divided into two categories, junior and senior, from ages 8 to 18. Sliding with elegance and forming breathtaking postures while skating, figure ice skaters mesmerized and startled the audience.

In men figure skating Mr. Anup Kumar from Hyderabad was declared winner, whereas Mr. Yogesh Gupta of Delhi and Mr. Joginder Kumar of UP remained at second and third position in the event.

In junior boys figure skating Mr. Nishchaya Lutra of Delhi and Mr. Nikhel of Andhra Pradesh were declared joint winner and Mr. Ashwin Raj and Mr. Pranav both from Kerala remained on second and third position respectively. In sub junior boys figure skating Abhijeet of Kerala was declared the winner, Hitesh from Andhra Pradesh remained on 2nd position, Preyam and Abhishek were declared jointly on third position.

Ashal of Karnataka was second, Heenal of Maharashtra was second and Oshana of Snowvit club was placed at third position.

Though it was a very good occasion for the enthusiasts of snow sports, sportsmen, tourists and local people but there were hardly any spectators due to lack of promotion of this event.

The host Himachal Pradesh once remained on the top, could hardly put up good show and the event was dominated by the outsiders mostly from South India.

The local press and major dignitaries were ignored by the organizers as there was hardly any pre-publicity of this event. This ice skating rink was renown as the oldest rink in the South East Asia as it was established first by Britishers in 1920.

But currently it is facing the neglect of management as there are no improvements in existing facility so far. Earlier there used to be more than 100 sessions of ice skating in every winter season but now there are hardly 40 sessions.

The ice skating rink is in shambles as there is no modernizations and improving of the facility at par with the world standard.
