Dalai Lama not going to South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s funeral : Tenzin Taklha

The Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama ,who is currently away from Dharamshala for winter sojourn has no plans to attend the funeral ceremony of Nelson Mandela. Confirming this on Monday at Dharamshala, Tenzin Taklha joint secretary at the Dalai Lama’s office said that the Dalai Lama has no plan for it and he has also not applied for visa clearance too. He said that Dalai Lama has wrote to the family of Mandela expressing his deep sadness at the anti-apartheid hero’s passing away.

“In his death the world has lost a great leader, whose steadfast and unflinching determination played a key role in securing peace and reconciliation during South Africa’s transition from apartheid rule. Under his leadership, South Africa was transformed through peaceful means, in the spirit of reconciliation,” the Tibetan leader wrote. Tibetan leader said that he will personally miss the South African leader, who he had hoped to meet again and for whom he had great admiration and respect.

News from South Africa is coming that 100 world leaders flying in from every corner of the globe for the state funeral of freedom icon Nelson Mandela. Many will join the 80,000 people expected to cram Tuesday into the FNB stadium in Soweto for a sweeping, emotional tribute to their inspirational first black president.

Tibetan leader was denied visa to travel to South Africa in 2009. The South African government admitted its decision was taken to avoid undermining relations with China, which reacts angrily to any country hosting the Dalai Lama.
